Burnden Culvert and Viaduct

Burnden Culvert and Viaduct, Bolton

September 2012 - Explored with Kenni and ViralEye

The culvert was constructed in the late 60s to take the River Croal under the newly built Farnworth and Kearsley bypass. Constructed of twin pre cast concrete box the culvert is quite short and featureless but looking upwards at the outfall we saw the magnificent looking Burnden viaduct.

Completed in 1848 the viaduct carried the Bolton to Bury railway until 1951 and its final closure to freight trains in 1970. It would have been rude of us not to have a closer look, so up we went. Once on top theres really not much to see with some uninspiring views of the A666 below.

Thanks to Kenni for being your lighting bitch haha and where's the people shot one?

Great stuff. Is this the culvert that goes under the town and has gated access to some shop basements?

And there's a nice abandoned rail line in town too, it forks off to the left on this GE link:

You're quite right! Kenni was saying that it's soon to be turned into a cycleway

Its down stream of the town centre culverts by a few hundred yards. I've looked at that branch on t'internet a few times but not checked it out yet, which is extremely lazy of me seeing as I used to work on the same road :D

The viaduct was resurfaced (along with darcy lever viaduct further down) as part of plans for a cycle way along the railway route which has unsurprisingly failed to happen yet.

The line went to the old Back o' th' bank power station and further beyond, with sidings all along. It closed in 1979 and one of the gas turbines that ran there is in the MOSI. Would of been a good splore looking at the old pics.
