Brunner Mond Culverts - Oct 2009

Visited last night with Pace.

This place has been on the 'to do' list for sometime. We have been waiting for the dust to settle after the last attempts to infiltrate this site.

The Brunner Mond Culverts take 'Wade Brook' through the inner workings of the Brunner Mond Calcium Chlorine plant in Lostock. After a long walk through the undergrowth we arrived at the twin culvert entrance. One of which is flowing and the other silted up. The culverts themselves can only be 75metres long but the view at the other end is fantastic. As we slowly waded through the silt became softer and the water deeper.

The silted up culvert

The flowing culvert starts about a foot deep.

Looking back to culvert exits in the Brunner perimetre.

Looking forward into the complex.

The brook is covered with pipework and bridges. At this point we are in the complex at the bottom of a wall with an office at the top. Water is about thigh deep and getting deeper. Ok for Pace with his 'all in one chest, head and neck neoprine waders' but getting wet for me with £15 specials from the fishing shop.

Looking forward.

We both would love to go further to see what was around the corner at the top, but time was ticking on and the water was getting colder and deeper.

More 'Pace' pictures to follow shortly.

I did ask earlier in the year.

Did you get as far as the twin concrete culverts in the middle of the site? Spark, Bungle and I got up to them last year but were also let down by the inadequecies of thigh waders. Essentially we were walking on a crust of unknown stuff in thigh deep water, then the crust would break underfoot, dropping us a further few inches towards wader-breach.

M :)

No. I suffered the same inadequecies as you. Pace was ok. We got as far as the office up on the left. Which, to be fair, was better that I expected.

Woudn't mind another look though. Are those concrete culverts gated?
