The Tivoli Theatre/Nightclub, Buckley, North Wales

The Tivoli Theatre, Buckley, North Wales.

Access was very easy seeing as I was at the Tiv on official musical photography-ness, and invited Sloth and Minxy along for the explore before the main gig of FFAF.

The Tiv has been a cinema, theatre and today it is a nightclub, and a very active one too. It was built in 1925, and was built on the site of the former Central Hall which was demolished in 1920. In 1932, a tradition started of running an annual pantomime. Dennis Griffiths produced a version of Dick Whittington in 1933 and a pantomime ran for 27 years. The last performance finished on March 14th 1959. It was Puss in Boots.

There are numerous tales of ghosts / spirits who reside in the building, most notably the Projectionist who died in the projection room when there was a fire in the building. The topmost floor has remained 'AS-IS' after the fire and smoke damage is evident in the stairwell and projection room. The Projection room now is used as a paint store, and all traces of its former use have gone.

As we head up the stairs from the ground floor, past the admin office on the 1st floor we get to the top of the stairs, and see these doors, covered with orange plastic.

As soon as we head in, we see the gallery is being used as storage for all the items from the Tiv's history, but theres a little of that later.

As you can see its quite decayed up here now, but plenty of original colour and fittings are still to be seen.

Now onto tonight's main feature, A film by Mr G. Stevens, entitled 'GIANT' - featuring James Dean.

Quote:

Giant is a 1956 American drama film, directed by George Stevens from a screenplay adapted by Fred Guiol and Ivan Moffat from the novel by Edna Ferber. The film stars Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean and features Carroll Baker, Jane Withers, Chill Wills, Mercedes McCambridge, Dennis Hopper, Sal Mineo, Rod Taylor and Earl Holliman. Giant was the last of James Dean's three films as a leading actor, and earned him his second and last Academy Award nomination – he was killed in a car accident before the film was released. Nick Adams was called in to do some voice-over dubbing for Dean's role.

In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Thanks for looking, and sorry about the quality of some of the pics

Fantastic, who'd have thought Buckley would house something like this!

Really interesting find. I unfortunately found myself here on a night out a while back, I had no idea that there was so much history behind the place.
