Hawarden Water Corn Mill
Went on a nice Welsh Walk and came across this old mill, can't really find much about it other than this:
http://hawarden.files.wordpress.com/...pg?w=678&h=431 WATER POWER CORN MILL, c. 1920 The remains of this mill can be seen by taking the footpath south-east from the car park on Tinker’s Dale Hill. Built for Sir lohn Glynne in 1767, it lies just outside the walls of the Park. It was powered by water from Broughton Brook which flows to the south. The brook was dammed forming a mill pond to the west of the mill, and two sluice gates controlled the flow of water through channels to the wheel, which was beneath the arch to the left of the mill building. The vintage lorry, on the right, is ready to leave with its load of corn, and the driver stands nonchalently waiting for the photographer to take the picture. William lones was miller from 1851 until his death in 1874, when his son, also William lones, took over until his death in 1910. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7490.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7488.jpg Little Sallybear for scale, she's not that little at least 5'7" !! It was a huge wheel. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7487.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7483.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7482.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7480.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7479.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7478.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7475.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7511.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7493.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7504.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7507.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7513.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...r/IMG_7524.jpg |
Cool find, it looks like a great building in the old picture.

Lovely, amazed those cogs haven't been dragged away for scrap.

Whats that to the left on picture number 4? It looks like stones banded together with iron bands. Wouldn't be a grinding stone would it?

Very nice find well done :thumbs

I think they were grinding wheels, I have seen corn stone grinders before, and they were solid stone, these ones looked like they were made from many pieces of stone. The whole place was amazing, and the late afternoon sun made it all the more delicious.
This place is 30 mins from home and I didn't even know it existed!! Quite exciting that there are still interesting finds close to home. |
what a sweet find :thumbs

THere certainly is Georgie, was flowing very fast though, it's a bit hard trying to show two little'uns how to behave near water when all you want to do is get in it yourself!!
