Rylands Mill Chimney, Wigan - November 2010.

Rylands Mill Chimney, Wigan - Climbed By Ojay, DocP, Buddah & Blino.

The mill was built in 1867, to designs by George Woodhouse for John Rylands, one of the area's largest cotton manufacturers. The Grade II
listed complex includes the former spinning mill, weaving shedsand engine house and chimney.

I originally visited the Mill back in March, but the chimney was locked down. (REPORT HERE)

I've been several times here since, only to find it locked :coat

After visiting the nearby bunker tonight, DocP informed me that the chimney was do-able......

Up we go, one by one, at least 150ft, and then we chilled up top, admiring the views. Although the weather was shite, we could see for miles.

As we grabbed a few shots, we could see blue lights coming towards us, then sirens...Fast forward 5 minutes and we were surrounded by 4 Police vehicles LOL. :bust

We just climbed back down and walked out, splitting into 2 we made our way accross the nearby park in opposite directions. (Blino also thought he heard dogs)

It was total jokes as we walked out, with 2 of Wigans finest shining torches about. There was a van waiting at the gates, so we just walked around to the next exit and out.

I swear they couldn't catch their arses with both hands :D

The other 2 bailed and a quick phone call confirmed they were away without any hassle.

We then headed on over to the old Police HQ for a mooch, as you do!

Up your chimney's....

Good to see it's doable again. You did abseil down the outside to get down didn't you?

How did you get the attention of the old bill?

We discussed it. But didnt do it. I well want to do it though, think Itd be great! Its just the climb back up to retrieve the rope which would be a ball ache!

We must have been seen by the locals and they called the fed's. Once on the top, I kept nice and low to avoid being seen, not because I was bricking it! ;)

Just do it as "pull through". Don't supposed you noticed if there was a sling still attached at the top of the ladders and some carpet taped to the railings?

Ojay 05-11-2010 12:39

Yep, sling and carpet wad still there. If we had gear with us we would have done it. It was a spur of the moment.

As for the police, was comedy how we were surrounded and just walked out :D

boboil 05-11-2010 13:25

Well done boys !!!!!!

sneak 05-11-2010 15:27

lol we had police attention when we was there also, they seem rather on it round there. I guess its probably partly to do with the influx of pikeys that derilict building next to it probably brought along.

Haha, I once thought the police were dumb and couldnt catch no one. I was wrong!

Couldn't get any pictures from the top as it was that windy, i was quite excited at first to climb this but after what felt like half an hours climb the girp of my hands and my biceps were aching like fook, it felt like id spent a a good few hours with the latest copy of loaded magazine:blush, but as i looked up i was only about a quarter of the way up:mad:. big up to all you how climb cranes the view from the top is sweet but i could not be arsed with that too often.
