Carnegie library liverpool april 2012
Postsed in deeper to avoid getting anyone into any bother!
The library was built in 1905, designed by architect Thomas Shelmedine and paid for by Andrew Carnegie. The library is in an appalling state, it was raining with as much water inside as there was outside. The water ingress is due to metal thieves taking 2 wheely bins worth of lead from the roof, they were caught but I'm sure their punishment was far less than the punishment this beautiful building has taken, rotten and buckled (up to a foot high in places) floors, failing ceilings, rot and mould, and a repair bill of over 750,000 quid i doubt it will ever be restored to it's former glory despite its listed status. A lot of the original features remain and there's even the odd book still lying around. The book cases are spectacular with original step ups and handles still intact. The damage is so bad that the water ingress has got to the entire building, the worst room being upstairs, you couldn't enter, not due to the dodgy floors but the shower of water pouring through the roof would have drenched us in seconds. some pics of what remains.... http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6164.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6158.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6156.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6154.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6143.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6137.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6135.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6131.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6128.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6124.jpg http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/IMG_6170.jpg |
