Arrow ARCHIVE - large tunnel dovestones resovoir, 29/10/09 - 30-10-2009, 07:50

Together with the Twidler we decided to follow up a lead we had on a large tunnnel somewhere up in the hills above dovestones, saddleworth, as far as i can find out the historys goes that..........Dovestones Reservoir was built in 1967 to collect water from the surrounding moorlands. This received a lot of opposition from the local mill owners who claimed the damming of the river would cut off their water supply. As a result of this, a tunnel was built higher up in the hillside to bypass the reservoir.

its made from red brick an has evidence of recent pointing work being done, the floor is made of large pavingstones, the tunnel runs dead straight for well over a mile with no deviations or and few inlets, anyhoo on with the pics

after a few hours of trudging round we finnally found this and could here a roaring nopise from inside.

after walkin for nearly 20 mins we finnaly found the source of said roar,
an inlet in the ceiling

around 800m in we came accross this, it looks like a natural cavity above the tunnel itself, perhaps a cave that was there befor the tunnel?? we decided to leave it and come back better prepared.

after we had reached the end of the tunnel miles from anything we find this

had a chance to try some new settings on the night mode heres the pics

thanks for looking
