Dinorwic Slate Quarry

Visited with Cavefrog (not an NWEX member)

This is the result of 2 visits, the first was to do the "Snakes and Ladders" trip in the quarry, the second was to have a good mooch about.

Dinorwic Slate Quarry is a large slate quarry located between Llanberis and Dinorwig in north Wales. It is said to be the second largest slate quarry in the world, with the largest been neighbouring Penrhyn Quarry. It covered more than 700 acres and consts of two main quarry sections with 20 galleries in each and a number of ancillary workings. an extensive internal tramway systems connected the quarries using inclines to transport slate between galleries.

The quarry was worked from the late 1780's with major work starting in the 1920's up until it closed in 1969, it was closed due to the drop in demand for slate, and due to safety reasons, it was becoming quite hard to remove the good slate without the large spoil tips sliding into the active workings, after a large slide in 1966 which killed 14 people production slowed almost to a stop with only minor work been carried out until it's total closure in 1969.
