Arson attack on Bryn Seiont hospital

Apr 7 2011

ARSON was the cause of a blaze which destroyed an annex of a former hospital currently being converted into a £4m dementia centre, fire chiefs have confirmed.

The fire broke out after 9pm at the old Ysbyty Bryn Seiont in Caernarfon.

Flames ripped through a section at the rear of the former community hospital, completely gutting the building.

The Pant Road site was bought by the Wrexham-based care organisation in 2009.

It is in the process of being developed into a dementia and nursing centre, called Canolfan Gofal Bryn Seiont.

The former Ysbyty Bryn Seiont was formed in 1914 as a sanatorium.

It was managed by the Caernarfon and Anglesey Hospital Management Committee since the 1948 NHS Act and treated patients with tuberculosis, which was a scourge of quarrymen in the Caernarfon district during the 1930.

Following a local government reorganisation in 1974 the site fell under the control of Gwynedd District Health Authority, and then North West Wales NHS Trust from 1999.

Bryn Seiont later became a hospital offering palliative care by Macmillan nurses for cancer patients and then a centre used by the Blood Transfusion Service and a base for ambulances.

In the 1990s, however, the health authority decided it was “unsuitable for modern inpatient healthcare” and it eventually closed in 2004 despite local opposition, with services moved to Ysbyty Eryri nearby.
