I discovered the outfall of this culverted section of Ley/Leigh Brook a while back. I got my waders today and off I went.
Located between Burnage and Levenshulme, I headed up the outfall (an RCP for as far as the eye could see) but headed back due to it being ankle-deep in soft, stagnant silt underfoot. Off to the infall!
Across the way, and down the road was the infall. This entire underground section of the brook is about 370m in length.
From the round brick infall , it goes on for what can be described as a back-breaking distance. The only respite being the odd manhole here and there where Gone and myself could stand within each others' personal space and stretch out.
One brick section was semi-circular and about four foot in height. This part was easily my favourite - so full of charm. From here it goes back to round brick tunnel.
Then it opened up into what was a relatively large chamber with major manhole access to it and the beginning of the RCP that I'd seen the other end of from the outfall.
This culvert was obviously built in stages. Possibly four or five. There are so many different styles. Really interesting and really fun.
Why is it the "Cookie Culvert"? Take a good old smell when you're down there!
Visited with Gone.
(Forgive me for taking the liberty of naming this. I couldn't find any information or any reports on anything that could have been this place).
