Default Atherton ROC Post - 10-03-2011, 23:38

I've just finished converting some old negatives to JPEG, and this is the result. Photos are from the Atherton Post and date from my visit in or around 2005. Like the other posts, this was stood down in 1991 but remained remarkably immune from vandalism until very recently. Although, most of the attractive items had already been taken out, all the old posters and notes were still on the walls - Weather reporting pro-formas, Russian Bomber silohettes etc. The post was actually sold on e-bay around 2005 and a local locksmith bought it for £8,500 as a bit of a publicity stunt. I met up with his a couple of times but it was obvious he'd no idea what he'd bought. There were a couple of publicised visits by local schools and Bolton Evening News but then he sold it on again. Not sure who has it now, but suspect, its one of the local land or property owners. Quality of these pics not the greatest, but you can get the idea.

An invitation for urban exploration if ever I've seen one!

Hand pump for sump still worked perfectly

Chemical toilet still in situ

Monitoring Room

Couldn't imagine these bombers ever making it over UK airspace

Timer switch for light to allow safe egress

Port for Fixed Survey Meter (radiation)

Ventilation port within access shaft
