Post Red Moss Culvert - May 2011. - 14-05-2011, 19:44

Red Moss Culvert, Horwich

I visited the loco works earlier in the year with AndyJ and since heard rumours from The Village Idiot of a tunnel that runs under the works from Red Moss.

Whilst passing through the area with Solo1 we decided to go take a closer look.

The Outfall is easily missed as the area is overgrown, despite the tunnel being around 1.8M.

Anyway we followed the 2 cast iron pipes in to see what this thing actually is/was...

Neither of us had wellies or wadors so wasn't expecting to go far, until SL just ploughed through all the silt and water

Naturally I followed into what appeared to be a small culvert with some kind of water feeder pipes for the old loco works.

We must have walked for an age, easily passing under the loco works before coming to an end where the drain appeared to be bricked, at this point I would say we were somewhere under Bury New Rd.

About half way were some ageing rungs to a compressed manhole which appeared to have not been lifted in years, other than that and the pipework not much too see, however still an interesting little mooch

Thanks for looking

Nice pics man

It would be chorley new road that it runs under though, bury new road is the other side of town.

Is it just a surface water drain then?

Good work, its a very small explore but at least its super easy.

I went the other day looking at the mining reamins but they all looks very very flooded.

I didn't go under Chorley new road The last manhole is just to the left of one of the works buildings, when I was on the ladder I could hear two workers chatting. I think it ends under the road leading onto the works from the main road.

I didn't wear wellies either

The culvert goes under a carpark area before going near the works, its quite a distance from the culvert entrance to the first buildings really.

Did any traffic pass over when you visited? The wagons make quite a boom when they run over the manholes.
