I'd been reading through Manchester blog's and websites for a good few days when I came across this, those guys seem to find the information linked to buildings quicker than anyone else. For the majority of last summer we had walked past this place without bothering to take a look, it looks in use from the outside - Visited with Rookie.
St.Michael's RC Church was built in 1859, it was closed in 2004 after 145 years of service. The church served for a large amount of Italian immigrants who came to the city in the search for work within the large mills dotted across Manchester.
After falling attendance rates within the church it was sadly closed, I read a blog stating that just after it's closure the priests continued to unlock the church doors so that the congregation could continue until the council changed the locks a couple of weeks later.
The 2004 'Madonna del Rosario Procession' was held on Sunday 11th July. Despite the fact that St. Michael's had been closed to worship, close to 1,000 people gathered as tradition outside its doors to begin the annual walk of their Roman Catholic faith through the streets of Manchester.
Local people are currently unsure of it's future as the majority of the buildings surrounding the church have been renovated into apartments and studios. The photographs are a bit dark for my liking but this place is surrounded by housing so we didn't take the chance of beaming the place up.
Cheers for Looking, Gone...
