Default Englefield Colliery - 26-09-2010, 21:26

This colliery is literally beside the A548 coast road, as the first picture of an adit testifies. There was a also a shft, recently visited by Auntie Cath, who was there because the adit had been interfered with, so they capped the shaft as well.

The colliery closed in 1938, essentially because it was not connected to the railway, which was only a few yards away. If it had survived until 1939, and with WW2 imminent, it may have lasted longer. Both the adit and the shaft went into the same ( Main ) seam, but are separated by a fault. This was just a quick mooch, but there was a surprise. There is a discussion on Welsh Coal Mines Welsh Coal Mines

The adit beside the A548 - literally !

The shaft :

There are few surface remains, but adjacent to the shaft are some substantial remains of the (presumably) fan house (building just above the "h" of "shaft" :

For the brick enthusiast:

No doubting where this brick is from, Buckley, and to make sure, it's near Chester (isn't Buckley in Wales and Chester in England....)

And this one is from Flintshire:

I'm just comparing your recent photo:

to this older one on Mine-Explorer when the adit was opened at the side:

It looks like they've just stuck the bricks back?

there is a bit of a write up on it if you follow the welsh coal mines link in the first paragraph above. It looks like it's going to fall down anyway !

It's my area of interest at the moment along that coast !

Never knew that was an adit,i recognised it straight away as being in Greenfield.I grew up not far away from there and there are dozens of capped mines in the area.
