Default Tiviot Dale Rail Tunnel, Manchester 24/09/10 - 26-09-2010, 20:57

Visited with Ojay, Woodburner, Doc P, and AEB.

After exploring Dodge Hill Air Raid Shelters, Ojay told us about this beaut of a tunnel literally next to the shelters.

The tunnel was 252 yards long and ran under the air raid shelters, and has now been backfilled from either end. This makes for a very awkward stoop to get to the centre of the tunnel. In the center of the tunnel a massive frame has been constructed to support the old brickwork to prevent collapse.

Old sleepers on the floor

Old school wedges between the tunnel roof and the frame

Great end to the night this was, good place for dicking about

This was a cool little bonus explore. Tidy shots again.

Most of mine look very similar apart from this one where someone wandered in front of the camera with a head torch on!

Whip them bullets!

An old British Rail friend told me that when they were building the motorway adjacent, that they had to inspect the rail tunnel continously for damage, because it was so close.

I think it has been buried - when we went a couple of guys went as far as they could but said it had been back-filled to the roof and there was no way out...

The supports in the middle are directly under the church, and a school I believe?

I don't know what it is about this tunnel but I love it, it just feels nice somehow and it has to be one of the most photogenic tunnels I've ever seen....

If you google the tiviot line and station it shows where the line used to run and where the tunnel is you it will give you an idea of the length and whats built above it now.
