Llanberis RAF Reserve Depot (Bomb Store) January 2008. Pic heavy

I expect most of you know about this if not.

Llanberis bomb store. Built in the Glynrhonwy slate quarry which closed in 1930. Storage for 18,000 tons of bombs. Same design as Harper Hill.

40 feet of broken slate was on top to pretect the store. But two-thirds of the structure collapsed under the weight of the overlaying backfill. Baring this in mind, this place must have been realy big.

More info.

Subterranean Britannica link.

Evil Jim and me.

After parking the car and checking the GPS we set of on our quest. The first thing we saw was some very big holes.

FBH

The view from the top. Not in the slightest bit dangerous.

Looking towards the stores at ground level.

looking back towards the entrances at ground level.

The front door.

The big train tunnel.

The train station.

Ground floor stores with central support pilers.

Cross connections for the ground floor stores.

OMG is what I said when I saw this. OMG is what Evil Jim said whrn he saw this.

Further along the OMG tunnel.

Stairs.

Lift.

The other lift.

First floor tunnel without the central support pillers. With light painting.

Graffiti.

More graffiti.

Thats it for now.

About 80 metres by 60, with walls 12 metres high. Before the collapse it would have been over 200 meters long

Excellent, that is a cool looking place, I've hiked really near to this loads of times and not known about it.

Manfrotto should start making 'floor' it's super steady

This looks great. Big fan of Llanberis from climbing days, but never happened upon this - different eyes I suppose(?)

You should see Bungle's pics of this place.

Oh wait, you can't because he couldn't find it!

(OK he was passing the area completely by co-incidence and didn't have any maps to hand but that would just spoil the story!)

Seriously it's a piece of piss to find. No really it's really easy, really really easy to find. Evil Jim and me had no map with us and we found it.
