Visited with Havoc and Jaff Fox – cheers to Jaff for the driving.
By this time on a dreich midweek afternoon, we’d visited the old Kaleidoscope site at Chinley and it was tipping down, so it was a relief to find a series of buildings with roofs still intact … and lots of original features still in place, too. The buildings used to comprise Harpur Hill College, which was latterly part of the University of Derby – the college relocated to another site in Buxton, and has been closed for several years, during which time several development proposals have been put forward, and duly turned down. I’m sure others have covered the history more thoroughly.
The buildings are pretty much Access All Areas once you’re inside, and there’s still piles of kit left, including a well-stocked photography and multimedia department. The downside is the active sports hall which was either being used for basketball or dog training. Jaff pressed his ear to the boarding, but we couldn’t tell which, so thought it politic to leave.
