Default Maenofferen Slate mine underground, Wales 2012 - 07-08-2012, 00:52

Second part to my maenofferen report and just the underground bit, visited with Walsh and Xan, we were convinced that we had found the remnants of a show mine after discovering an underground lake with a viewing area with lovely slate paved walkways and fake polystyrene slate all painted black but we are unsure, take a look at the underground video and see for yourself, also this mine was by far one of the most untouched mines that we have visited so far with lots of stuff still left to see and that is why it is in Non public.

Maenofferen closed in 1999 but the quarry is still live

the first bit of video was taken with a gopro so the sound is crap and then it ran out of battery so all of the rest was shot on my trusty kodak playsport.

Down the massive incline and right to the bottom

Brings you out here, it was very damp and misty here and my camera lens kept misting up, see how big this place is

Then onto the next chamber with another huge winch

These dip tanks were used to load the motor, probably something to do with speed control Mr Asmodi in shot

The winch pulleys

In bad need of a cobbler

This is what its all about for me..Graff from 1898 and 1906

Then we followed these lovely paved pathways and started to think "showmine" but despite all of the obvious signs, the roof was in such a poor state with collapses and pending collapses that it seemed unlikely

a lake that had a veiwing area that was fenced, you can see the fenced off bit across the water

This was a cooking pot type thing, Walsh confirmed this by looking inside to see Chicken Korma

Me in the vent chamber, since Ojay showed me how to take this shadowy type picture in Cwymorthin I just cant help myself:

You should have seen it a few years ago - all the copper still there, locos, batteries, everything that was far underground was completely untouched. And the surface stuff was a hundred times better than it is now. I was really lucky to see it as it was then and it remains one of my all time favourite underground explores. Some nice pics there though, get down there again to see more!
