Sorry, I never left the 20thC, keep putting 19xx instead of 20. Now corrected

I think it's because they would have to make a bridge for the HS2 line to go over the through tracks that service platforms 13+14 - that's why the new station will be on the north side of Piccadilly. I'm more intersted in why it didn't end up in Salford, near Salford Central, it was one of the options and would have rebalanced the centre of MCR/Salford somewhat... I suspect Lees and Bernstein were lobbying hard.

Drove past this afternoon and a digger was busy demolishing the roof and walls at the top of the ramp looks like the end is nigh

Well done. I expected to be bored by the same old shots but you surprised me with those pictures under the platform. Never seen that before.

Found this old photo from 1959 before it closed.

Imagine what it would of been like to be down there when the place was in full swing, hundreds of people walking about and huge trains pulling in and out of the station!

Also, does anyone have any information regarding the direct hit the place took in the war? I got this: Mayfield suffered the effects of bombing during World War II, when it was hit by a parachute mine on 22 December 1940.

And, what's this about: After years of abandonment and many proposed development schemes, work on dismantling the structure began in February 2013. The site will be used for Manchester International Festival in July 2013
