I've walked across the estuary several times but only in Speedos because the mud on the Runcorn side is thigh-deep and being clothed makes negotiating deep mud very risky - the weight of soggy clothes can drag you down while a "naked" human body floats in mud. Never been able to make the last hundred yards as on the Widnes side 'cos there's a channel that just rips along and although not deep you'd just be whipped off your feet.

Over the past few years the river has been chewing big chunks from Astmoor Salt Marsh so looks as though there's been a major change in course. Yes, the incoming tide is really vicious with a bore a good 2-3ft high. If I go out on the estuary I always check the tide tables and make sure I'm off the sands a good 3 hours before high tide. Bear in mind that tides here are 45 mins behind Liverpool.
