Default ARCHIVE - Harecastle tunnel, Stoke - Sept 09 - 25-09-2009, 17:32

Just a few shots from today's rather poorly equipped 'splore.
Only got about a third of the way through due to forgettin my wellies.
Not a patch on Mendo's post http://www.nwex.co.uk/showthread.php...ght=harecastle not even sure it's the same tunnel as there are apparently several in the immediate area. seems like it's been pretty badly floded at some point leaving a lovely orange tidemark the length of the tunnel.

the norhtern end of the tunnel in the distance

a selection of the junk left behind by the flood

A refuge??

And lastly, close by is and underground reservoir, could this be an infall just crying out for some SRT????

Thanks

Went back on thursday with Jr, took a few more shots, definitely more water here since the last time i visited but managed to get to around the 500m mark before Jr got jittery bout the prospect of a wellie breach lol.
Looks like the money allegedly ploughed into "flood alleviation work" was well sppent eh?? lol

Ochre'd refuge

with some pretty ochre stalectites

resulting in an interesting formation beneath

and a little more of the same

"drain"???

and another to the right of it, worth keeping an eye out for as I didn't venture close enough to "test" the depth

passed the first Ventilation shaft

with the wierd "apocalypse now"esque helmet on a pole

a little light painting

before heading back and spotting some straws in another refuge

and another pole indicating another submerged drain

Worth noting if you do take a wander through here, there are SEVERAL drains, mostly down the central line of the tunnel, but also a few along the walls, VERY FEW are marked in any way, so a walking pole is advised.
And NO I didnt find out the hard way.
Lastly apologies to Mendo for the PM's, I'm not usually so thick, but I guess there is such a thing as looking at OS maps for too long a length of time
