Default HM Stanley Hospital - St Asaph - April 2012 - 19-06-2012, 19:20

This caused a bit of a stir, so I'd appreciate it staying here if that's OK...

HM Stanley - St Asaph - April 2012

Visited with Gone & NickUK

I got wind of this place being set for closure a couple of months back and it was recently listed for sale. Given it's history and final use I figured it would be worth a look so we made the trip over to Wales for a poke about.

There was a great deal of stuff left behind, including thousands of patient records, dental moulds, glasses and all other kinds of equipment.

Some of the hospital has clearly been closed off for a while, the most recent part closing only 2 weeks ago.

St Asaph Poor Law Union was formed on 10th April, 1837. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, 24 in number, representing its 16 constituent parishes.

The population falling within the Union at the 1831 census had been 22,017 with parishes ranging in size from Llandulas (population 307) to Denbigh (3,786). The average annual poor-rate expenditure for the period 1834-36 had been £11,431 or10s.5d. per head.

St Asaph Union workhouse was erected in 1838-9 on the east side of the Denbigh Road to the south of St Asaph. The Poor Law Commissioners authorised an expenditure of £5,499.16s.8d. on construction of the building which was intended to accommodate 200 inmates...

Brilliant stuff.

Nick said that you had a bit of trouble from North wales finest. Seems you upset them quite a bit .

Good one for getting it done.

Cheers. Apparently the police and head of security were there the day after, we never met them but they were swabbing for prints etc, I was surprised about the records being left behind, hundreds of thousands of them!

I'm not:

St Georges Asylum, Stafford
Denbigh
Withington, Manchester
Blackburn Royal

Seen patient records in them all. Withington had some nasty samples in little jars.

My mum was among the last of the staff to leave here. She was in ophthalmology, you may well have photographed her desk!

Lovely building and in remarkable condition for its age, I wonder why is has closed down?

Yes, I spent around an hour reading through old records at deva in Chester too, miss that place, never got bored of deva.
