Twice a year caving clubs set up a winch so Jo Public can get down into the main chamber of this fantastic system.
Apologies for it not being terribly urbex, but thought a few people on this site would be interested. This system can be done without the winch, but it is a great way to get beginners into the system.
We went up on Sunday, and after struggling to get Twitch
out of bed at 6.30 got up to the entrance for 9.30. After paying our tenner, we sat and enjoyed the lovely Yorkshire moors weather for 2 1/2 ours before it was our turn to go down. Strapped into a Bosuns chair you are winched down the 110 Metre shaft into the main chamber. This is where most people have a potter around. The chamber is the biggest in the UK and is big enough to fit the York Minster cathedral in.
For the more caving types there is 11.6Km of passages to explore.
We went through into Mud hall which up to Titan being discovered was the second largest chamber in the UK.
After another diversion into sand cavern, headed back into the main chamber for the winch out.
Great day out if anyone is looking for something different to do.
