Default Gwynfynydd Gold Mine - wales - Feb 2012 - 20-02-2012, 00:18

Gwynfynydd Gold Mine.

Visited with AndyJ and Buddah.

Big thanks to andy for doing all the hard work on this one.

Gwynfynydd mine clossed in 1999 after 137 years of mining, it is estimated that 45,000+ troy ounces of gold was removed from this mine. In 1986, the mine gave a 1kg ingot to the queen for her 60th birthday, in 1993 the mine opened it's adits to the public, giving guided tours of the workings while still keeping mining opperations going, this ment turning some of the surface buildings into a visitor center.

The mine finally closed in 1999 partly due to the rising costs involved in maintaining health and safty, and partly due to tightening environmental control legislation which made the mine owners liable for the quality of the mine discharge into the vally river.

Not a great deal to say about our trip, what was fairly uneventfull, we entered on one level, made our way through the mine, and exited through another level, which involved buddah crying about ending up balls deep in some nice icy cold water, this is the second time this has happened in the last 3 outings, he WAS NOT happy

some pics.

Nicely done. Firmly on my list this one, and has been for a while.

Il add my little bit, what a fantastic mine this is so much left to see and loads to keep you entertained. All them ladders was brilliant, the only let down was nut deep water at the end which was so F***ING cold but definitely one of the best if not the best mine ive been to.
