We had our first look over here back in 2009 and over the years we have been priviliged to see a fascinating glimpse into our industrial past as the opencast revealed old workings dating back to the late 1800's.

Role on May 2011 and the last seam is being worked prior to the land being landscaped and redeveloped, gonna be pretty sad when this place finishes extracting coal. And i still aint got a spider fossil

I notice the excavators are Rustons. Are they still in business or are they older than they look?

I think that will be a while yet, my mum who lives really close to it has recently had a letter, telling her that permision to remove another 2 million tonnes (or something stupid like that anyway) has been granted and they will be there untill 2013, and the services she gets for free for putting up with the place will continue untill 2015.
