Arrow Carnegie Library - Liverpool - July 2010 - 26-07-2010, 15:51

Opened in 1905, Lister Drive was designed by Thomas Shelmerdine, one of Liverpool’s most under-appreciated architects. Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who paid for Lister Drive library and thousands of others in cities across the world, was an even more extraordinary character. He was the son of an impoverished but self- educated and politicised Scottish weaver, who sailed for America in 1848 for a better life. The family settled in Pittsburgh, an industrial town so filthy it was dubbed “hell with the lid off”. It was here Carnegie built a vast fortune, eventually controlling a manufacturing empire of such size that, when sold in 1901, made him the richest man in the world. The building is now left as it was when open books still in place on ther shelves. I wonder for how much longer as the roof is leaking badly.

Thank You.

i think the council are a bit short on money to get it burnt down at the mo. rumour mill it could re-open with a health centre council office attached as well. To give the council some credit garston library renovation has been done very well and gets used by shock !! locals who can read !!!

The place looks excellent and well done on documenting it.
