After R1 showing an interest in coal mines i said i would post some pics of this drift mine that we "found" early last year.
Sorry about the quality of the phots but i only had a point n shoot then. On reflection this was possibly the most dangerous mine that i have done, Oxygen levels down to 10%, anyhow after 6 months research and 3 months digging we were in, the first people to enter in over 40 years.
Driven by the NCB after nationalisation in 1946 the drift mined various seams up until when it closed in 1965 and a total profit of £75000 was made over that period.
The portal being built in 1946
Bingo! 6 months of research pays off, we found the portal
The first view peeping into the portal
3 months later and 20 metres later............. still digging!
the small matter of breaking through a brick wall and we are in
"riding on the conveyors is strictly prohibited"
Switch gear
Limestone dust fire wall
Warwick, used to stop coal tubs rolling back down the drift
counter balance for the warwick
s'pose it was always gonna end like this, bastardo, water!!
"I'm a pitmon get me outta here"
A treasured posession found whilst digging
