Freddies Culvert, Tyldesley

Visited with Snake Oil and we believe this is a first for the site???

History

"Hindsford Brook and numerous springs supplied sufficient water to fill the lodges and feed the Lancashire boilers. Most the mills huddled together at the west end of town, close to both coal and water". Unfortunately this was about all I could find.

The Visit

This was a visit I have had on my list for some time now not even knowing if it was accessible. Myself and Snake Oil turned up to the infall only to find it all grated up. A brief walk to the outfall and we was presented with an open 6-7ft corregated pipe and numerous other outfalls with nothing coming out of them. After much poking with a big stick into the water, it was definitely a waders job so back to the car we go past some manholes with water rushing underneath them!

Waders on and back we go and enter the water cautiously hoping it wouldn't go too deep. On entering the pipe I think we both knew this would be a nice stroll with hopefully a few surprises along the way. About half way through the corregated pipe changed to concrete and eventually presented to a big waterfall where the infall was. A bit of a play with some lights and some wire wool and we was soon making our way back to the outfall for a few more photos.

Here are the photo's;

It was a nice relaxed mooch this one, a return visit to check the top of the waterfall to the infall (maybe - its not very far) because of the ridiculous amount of water cascading off it, and definitely a return visit to pop a lid into what is probably a CSO judging by the rushing water under it and a dry stinky outfall decorated with lady products next to the culvert.

heres my pics, pretty much the same cos theres only so many different pics you can get of CMP!

Nice one, I remember mooching around here years ago but it was too stoopy for my bad back!

Check out the culvert near Lilford Park too.

And could you do me a favour? Ask Ian at the barbers if he ever found the keys to that tunnel in his shop basement.
