Rakewood Viaduct, Littleborough, July 2011.
Rakewood Viaduct carries the M62 Motorway over Rakewood Valley and Longden End Brook at Littleborough in Greater Manchester. The viaduct is 840ft long and 140ft above the valley floor. It was built in 1966 by Reed and Mallik Ltd as part of the massive motorway construction project and opened to motorway traffic in October 1971. Due to the height of the bridge and the surrounding hillside exposure it is often subject to high speed cross winds. In October 2010 a man plunged to his death in a bizarre tragedy on the bridge. It is thought he deliberately jumped from a viaduct after jumping out of a lorry driven by his father. The man, believed to be from Elland, was a passenger heading across the Viaduct The lorry was on the long downhill westbound stretch of the motorway when the tragedy happened. It is thought the man’s father frantically tried to stop his son from jumping over the rails, but was unable to do so. The son fell over the viaduct barrier and his body was discovered in rough land beneath the bridge. He was later named as the Siddal ARLFC prop forward Matthew Smith aged 30. Mr Smith had a partner and a three year old daughter. A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “There are no suspicious circumstances.
