Today we decided to head out for a mooch about Rhiw-Goch slate mine. As far as we know, we are the first to give it a good look over, and report on it.
The mine shut in the 40's, having been worked for about 100 years, and has fairly extensive opencast working's (Despite a CPAT entry saying otherwise). We found what we are fairly certain is an Adit, but it was backfilled a while ago, so no underground access.
The tips are extensive, but overgrown, so overhead photography is quite deceiving. Pretty much the whole hill is covered in waste, as I ended up at the top of it, having headed straight for the top of the tip in a vain search for an open or accessible adit.
There are several buildings in surprisingly good condition. The mill is fairly obvious, with other associated buildings, and there are a couple of large metal containers, which we think held Oil.
On with the pictures...
Retaining wall holding the Tip back.
One of the more Visible tip's, sot from the Incline.
Some stacked Headers.
More Stacked Headers.
A Retainng wall, keeping the tip from encroaching onto the incline.
A Solitary piece of rail, poking out of a Tip.
Showing the very bottom of the Opencast workings... it goes a *lot* farther up the hill than this.
Tree's that have grown inside the Mill building.
The entrance to the Mill.
A well constructed building.
Backfilled Adit. No fair :-(
