Default Kendle Milne & Co / House of Fraser, Manchester - October 2010 - 08-10-2010, 23:13

Visited with Gone.

Opening in 1832 as Watt's, the store changed its name to Kendle, Milne & Faulkner in 1836 when 3 employee's bought out the business. Purchased in 1919 by Harrod's and for a brief time following this, was known by this name. Kendle's reverted it's name back due to customer outcry. Then in 1959 the Harrod's Group, together with Kendle's was bought out by House of Fraser and the name was finally changed in 2005 to the current 'House of Fraser'.

The store is the second largest in Manchester at 280,000 sq ft and serves in a purpose built Art Deco building. The rooftop is made up of several platforms and gives an all round view of the Manchester Skyline.

I'm certain Gone has some awesome pictures to add to this.

Cheers for looking, Jimmy

Hot hot hot.

It was designed by J W Beaumont + Sons, who also were responsible for the Pearl Assurance Building (Albert Square/Princess Street) and the Manchester University Student Union building. It was finished in 1939, but not occupied until 1945. There was a tunnel connecting the store with their other premises across the street, now Waterstones...

photos here too
