Those who have scoped my reports in the past might have noticed that I have a bit of a thing for industrial and functional architecture, especially from the twentieth century. Today I was out and about with my Dad taking in some of West Lancashire’s water engineering, pumping stations and water towers. One that is well tucked away near Ormskirk and is a particularly fine example from 1934 with a water tower and substation in the same architectural language. Just as we were driving away I clocked a bit of concrete poking out of a rise and amongst some trees. So, stop again, back over the fence and a quick poke around later I found this pleasing little air raid shelter refreshingly free from graffiti, but sadly lacking any internal fixtures. It is recorded on the Defence of Britain site
here, but was a happy little find in a top day with the old man.
