River Croal Culverts

BOLTON

Most of the river is culverted through Bolton town centre, running under Knowsley Street; Market Place and Bridge Street. Before 1836 the River Croal formed the boundary between the townships of Great and Little Bolton. I know this has been done before, but as this was only my second Urbex Experience and the first proper use of my DSLR camera I just had to share! (hope you don't mind).















Anyway, I think I've posted far too many photos so I'm going to stop!!

nice one, the old pics look interesting and they explain the corrugated metal work you can see when you're down there.

If you do it by day you can hear the footsteps above you in the understore part lol.

If you go off to the right in the 8th pic there's some weird metal work, don't know if it's some kind of old access to that cellars in your 8th pic from the building that used to be above, it's now the carpark to the church oposite diamonds. I'd be interested to know what used to be above this if anyone knows.

In the 8th pic we had a good look around but its just a couple of brick archways which dont lead anywhere.

I thought that pic of the corregated culvert being built was a pretty good find!

definitely a good find, never seen those before.

It was half collapsed and took a bit of crawling so maybe it's fully collapsed now but it was off the right hand side of the 2 brick archways, it leads or did lead to a vertical passage with some steelwork and pipework at the top which would have been street/carpark level, I'll have a hunt for some pics.

It was the site of a nightclub, got set on fire in the 60's I think whilst it was open, apparently a few died jumping out down to the shallow river. I'll find the name of it later.

I know where you mean now, and unfortunately it was either filled in or collapsed :-(

I've got to say, that even though this is only my second outing, I really enjoyed this one as it was so varied and steeped in History!
