Arrow Yr Eiffel/Trefor Quarry, N. Wales, July 2010 - 10-10-2010, 19:21

A big thanks to Mrs. NMB for picking a good campsite near to something I missed from Ianzzr in January and found whilst browsing GE for likely subjects. There’s a deal more structures higher up within the quarry and on the other side of the mountain that I didn’t have time to get to. Some are in Ianzzzr’s report here, but the main event for me was the 1923 concrete loading building used to transfer the quarried stone to the tramways that moved the stone down to a jetty. I am a lover of all things concrete, utilitarian, modernist and functionalist and this building works on all of those levels for me. It probably isn’t hugely impressive to others, but buildings of this type from this period are extremely rare and to find one as simply brutal as this properly gets my juices going. The way it has collapsed is near spectacular and it has an air of something primitive like a Shinto ruin or something from a fantasy adventure. There’s enough in the way of shonky ledges and holes to crawl in, but no access to anything you could truly term ‘inside’ or a ‘room’. I’ve hesitated with this upload as I am still smarting from leaving my tripod on the side of the mountain and not realising until getting back to Manc. That was on top of losing my sunglasses in their case out of my pocket and into the sea the night before! Just about getting over the ‘damn I’m such an idiot’ phase, so time to show.

Historic images from here (1956), shortly before the closure in 1960.

the belly of the beast. It’s a bit of a scramble, but you can still climb inside one of the collapsed chambers. It was too sketchy for me to go any further.

Most sources say it still produces the granite for curling stones, but the whole place looked desolate on our inspection.

I cannot find the name of the engineer or architect online, and the local studies collection of Gywnedd libraries only lists one pamphlet in Welsh about the quarry. If anyone has further information I’d be glad to hear it.

peace
