Default The remains of a giant steelmill - 25-05-2010, 10:25

It was in 1869 when the company 'Société des Hauts Fourneaux de Luxembourg' was established in Esch-zur-Alzette
and in the same year the start was made to build the blastfurnace, then known as 'Usine Brasseur'.
Three years later the first furnace was fired.

In 1899 the factory was expanded by 3 more furnaces.
Twelve years later, in 1911, it was connected with the nearby mill in Esch-Belval which resulted in a huge complex.

During the 1950's the demand of metal was slowing down and they had to shut down some off the furnaces.
In 1977 it was the end, all furnaces stopped, workers were send home unemployed.

Since then most of the buildings has been demolished,
only a small part is still standing and reminds us of the steelproduction.

There are some part-abandoned areas in the steel mills in Sheffield if anyone fancies live sites?

Wow, interesting stuff. Surprising that it's been left for over 30 years like that.
